It’s hard to understand why one needs a personalized number plate, unless you are a celebrity. However, it’s a bit different with our Middle Eastern counterparts, where oil wells are the movies and Sultans are the celebs, who also happens to be car buffs.So, it came as a less surprise to know that the third most expensive license plate in the world was sold in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. A plate bearing solely the digit ‘7’ was sold for $4.6 million (RM 15.64 Million), in a government auction, falling just a couple of million dollars short of the second most expensive plate, ‘5’ (also sold in Abu Dhabi for $6.86 million / RM 23.3 Million), while falling way short of the most expensive plate ‘1’ (sold to Emirati businessman in 2008 for $14.3 million / RM 48.64 Million).
In total, 72 specialized plates were sold on Saturday and it’s needless to say that a custom license plate makes a great collectible.
